S08 E24 - The Nation Must Awake: My Witness to the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921

Welcome to Genealogy Adventures, where we explore the intersections of history, family, and legacy. Today’s episode is a powerful journey into one of the darkest—and too often overlooked—chapters in American history: the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. We are honored to be joined by Annaliese M. Bruner, writer, editor, and direct descendant of a survivor of the massacre. Annaliese is the great-granddaughter of Mary E. Jones Parrish, a journalist and educator who bore witness to the horrific events that devastated the thriving Black community of Greenwood—often referred to as “Black Wall Street.” Her firsthand account, originally published in 1923, has been reissued under the title The Nation Must Awake, with a new introduction by Annaliese herself. In this episode, we’ll discuss the legacy of Mary Parrish’s testimony, the importance of intergenerational storytelling, and the role of family history in restoring truth to the historical record. This is not just a history lesson—it’s a call to remembrance, justice, and acknowledgment.
