Sonny Von Cleveland As a motivational speaker, coach, and activist, I am passionate about sharing my story to aid and inspire people to choose growth from adversity because I have done just that. As a child, over the course of five years, I was the repeated victim of sexual molestation by multiple men, which led me to become an angry adolescent that saw me incarcerated at age sixteen for eighteen years. Since my release, I have mentored and worked with hundreds of individuals to encourage them to own their stories so that they too can recognize they have a choice – they can choose to live in victimhood, or they can choose to forgive, let go, grow, and empower themselves to live fulfilling meaningful lives. My core message is that it’s not what happens to us or what we have done that defines us; it’s how we choose to move forward and grow those matters.

James E. Combs Jr. is a native of Dayton, Ohio. He is a loving husband and father of two children.
James graduated from John H. Patterson Cooperative High School in Dayton, Ohio. He attended
The University of Cincinnati, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. James later
completed his Master of Arts from Antioch University McGregor and 2nd Masters of Education from
Wright State University. He was selected to attend the City of Dayton Chamber of Commerce
Leadership Academy in 2007. James was commended for his work as a community-based officer in
2002. In 2012 he was recognized by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity for Outstanding Service in the community.
Mr. Combs spent several years in the U.S. Army and went on to build a career in law enforcement for
over 25 years with the Dayton Police Department. In 2006, he Developed and implemented a
Public Safety Program for aspiring students at David H. Ponitz Career High School and Central State
University. James collaborated with Adult Protective Services for senior citizens, Southwest Business
Association and Southwest City Priority Board to establish a relationship between the police department
and the community. Programs such as Cub Scouts, Food for Family Drive, tutoring in local churches
and elementary schools, City of Dayton Beautification and Drug Prevention Neighborhood Program. He
was an Adjunct Professor in Law Enforcement at Central State University and responsible for two
campuses located in Dayton and Xenia Ohio. James established a ride-along program for students to
gain insight into policing in urban communities. He mentored potential police candidates and
participated in the interviewing process.
During his 2nd career, he continues to mentor and consult with aspiring individuals in the area of law
enforcement. In addition, he currently works for Warren County as a special needs teacher
(Intervention Specialist). Mr. Combs has been highly committed to working with families and students
through his fraternity and organization (Omega Psi Phi), (Masonic Lodge), who have disabilities in the
community. He continues to advocate for students and their families by providing educational
mentoring support (Girls and boys club), resources for students at risk, public safety career
mentoring, and consulting on law enforcement projects.
