Sit-down conversation with former NFL player John Earle
What is your purpose and how do you define purpose?
Obstacles
Staying Humble
Biography
John came to know Jesus through a depressed and lonely time in his life. On March 21, 1991 after John had broken his foot for the 4th time, thoughts of suicide were heavy on his heart and on his mind. From an all-conference and an all-American candidate on the football field to 14 months later breaking both his feet, John was left confused, depressed, and wanting to take his own life. It was a conversation that John had with his dad on March 21, 1991 and the words his dad shared with him “Son, Jesus loves you and will never leave you nor forsake you, but you have to talk to him personally”. That night John realized his religious lifestyle was leaving him empty-handed and he needed a personal relationshp with Jesus. He got down on his knees that night and simply surrendered his life into the hands that gave him life!
John would stay healthy the next year regaining his football prowess and one year and one month after thoughts of suicide, he would realize a dream come true! On April 22, 1992 John would hear his name called at the annual NFL draft! He was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals with the 282 pick of the draft that year, John received a phone call from Offensive Line Coach Jim McNally who informed him he had just been selected as their next draft choice! “Big John” realized his NFL dream had come true and he cried like a baby! John would play for 5 different NFL teams and spent two seasons in the Canadian Football League, winning two championships!

A WOMAN'S PREROGATIVE
HOSTED BY REVEREND LYDIA FOUGERES
CO-HOST DR. JACALYN KERBECK
EPISODE 2026-02
12 JANUARY 2026
DISCUSSION
The post-holiday reset is rarely simple. Disrupted schedules, financial hangovers, health slip-ups, and mental fatigue collide as real life resumes. This episode takes a practical, no-nonsense look at how individuals, families, and workplaces recalibrate after the holidays—what actually works, what doesn’t, and why forcing productivity too fast often backfires. We examine sleep, nutrition, finances, focus, and emotional regulation, and how small, disciplined adjustments—not dramatic resolutions—create stability and momentum going into the new year. The goal is not perfection, but structure, clarity, and sustainable routines that hold under pressure.

In this powerful and grounding episode of Onion Soup, Dexter sits down with Terry Tucker—motivational speaker, author, and cancer warrior—to explore what it truly means to cultivate resilience, clarity, and purpose in the face of chronic stress, uncertainty, and life-altering adversity.
Terry shares his remarkable life journey, from growing up in south Chicago to navigating multiple career paths in marketing, hospital administration, and law enforcement—before facing a 12-year battle with a rare and aggressive form of melanoma. Through years of treatments, setbacks, and profound physical and emotional challenges, Terry developed what he calls the “Four Truths”—principles that helped him regulate fear, strengthen mental fortitude, and remain grounded through extreme circumstances.
This conversation goes beyond inspiration and into embodied wisdom. Together, Dexter and Terry explore how the mind-body connection, faith, and intentional mindset shifts can help calm the nervous system during prolonged stress. Terry explains how purpose-driven living creates emotional stability, restores inner strength, and allows us to meet life with courage rather than overwhelm.
Terry also introduces his book, Sustainable Excellence, which distills his lived experience into practical insights for building long-term vitality, emotional resilience, and meaning—especially when life doesn’t go as planned.
This episode is a masterclass in meeting pain without collapsing, finding calm within chaos, and choosing to live with intention—even when the body is pushed to its limits.
In this episode, we explore one of the lesser-known but deeply impactful experiences people living with dementia may face the “Stranger in the Mirror” phenomenon. This occurs when a person no longer recognizes their own reflection and instead believes they are seeing a stranger, a visitor, or even a new friend.
Through the true story of Harold and his wife, Nancy, we take a heartfelt and enlightening look at how this phenomenon appears in day-to-day life. Harold’s journey—complete with hallway conversations, shared cookies, and misplaced shoes—illustrates the complicated blend of memory loss, perception changes, and shifting self-identity that dementia often brings.
We break down:
What the “stranger in the mirror” phenomenon is and why it occurs
How dementia affects self-recognition, perception, and visuospatial processing
Why mirrors can trigger confusion, fear, or unexpected interactions
How caregivers can respond with compassion, understanding, and safety in mind
What environmental and communication strategies can ease distress
Listeners and viewers will also learn practical, actionable tools for navigating these moments, including how to adjust the environment, reduce triggers, create emotional safety, and “join their reality” when appropriate.
This episode offers:
A relatable real-life story that captures the emotional core of dementia caregiving
Clinical insights into mirror misidentification and related cognitive changes
A clear explanation of contributing neurocognitive and environmental factors
Communication approaches caregivers can use to reduce fear and frustration
An environmental checklist to help create a more supportive care space
Guidance on when to seek additional medical evaluation or professional support
The Stranger in the Mirror phenomenon isn’t just about misrecognizing a reflection—it’s about the profound ways dementia reshapes identity, memory, and perception. By understanding what is happening beneath the surface, caregivers can respond with the patience, empathy, and reassurance their loved ones truly need.
Resources Mentioned
Insights and story content adapted from caregiver experiences and dementia research.
In this follow-up segment, Lisa dives into a second set of myths that often lead to misunderstanding and stigma around dementia. These myths cover topics beyond memory, including work ability, daily decision-making, communication, behavior, cultural differences, supplements, technology use, and the belief that dementia is a psychological issue rather than a medical one.
Lisa breaks down each myth with practical truths that help families better understand what dementia really looks like. Viewers learn why independence still matters, how meaningful activities can be adapted, why technology can help rather than harm, and how a full care team—not just doctors—supports better outcomes. These insights offer encouragement, clarity, and realistic expectations for anyone caring for or supporting someone living with dementia.
In this episode, we explore reminiscence therapy, a powerful, non-pharmacological approach that helps people living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia reconnect with their memories, identity, and sense of self.
Reminiscence therapy uses long-term memories, which often remain accessible even as short-term memory fades. Through familiar photos, music, objects, and storytelling, individuals are invited to reflect on meaningful moments from their past in a supportive and engaging way.
What Viewers Will Learn
What reminiscence therapy is and why it is effective for people living with dementia
How recalling positive life experiences can improve mood and reduce anxiety
Why long-term memory remains more accessible than short-term memory
How reminiscence therapy strengthens relationships between caregivers and loved ones
Ways families and care partners can use reminiscence therapy at home
Key Benefits Discussed
Emotional well-being: Reduced stress, anxiety, and feelings of isolation
Cognitive engagement: Encourages thinking, communication, and interaction
Sense of identity: Helps individuals reconnect with who they are and where they came from
Stronger connections: Creates meaningful moments between individuals and caregivers
Practical Applications
This episode also shares simple, real-world ways reminiscence therapy can be used, including:
Looking through old photographs together
Playing music from a person’s youth
Using familiar objects or scents to spark conversation
Encouraging storytelling without correcting or rushing
We also discuss important considerations, such as recognizing emotional distress and gently redirecting conversations when difficult memories arise.
Why It Matters
Reminiscence therapy reminds us that memory is more than recall—it’s connection. By honoring a person’s life story, we promote dignity, comfort, and meaningful engagement, even as dementia progresses.
This episode highlights why reminiscence therapy is an essential tool in person-centered dementia care, offering benefits not only for those living with dementia, but for families and caregivers as well.
In this episode of Minding Dementia, we explore one of the most common questions families ask during the diagnostic journey: How accurate is a PET scan for Alzheimer’s disease?
We break down what an amyloid PET scan is, what it can and cannot tell you, and how it fits into the broader process of identifying Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. This episode is designed to reduce fear, clarify confusion, and help families better understand the tools used in modern dementia care.
What Is an Amyloid PET Scan?
An amyloid PET scan is a specialized imaging test that looks for amyloid plaques in the brain. These plaques are associated with Alzheimer’s disease. During the scan, a tracer is administered that binds to amyloid, allowing doctors to see where and how much plaque is present.
While amyloid plaques are strongly linked to Alzheimer’s disease, their presence alone does not confirm a diagnosis.
How Accurate Is an Amyloid PET Scan?
Amyloid PET scans are estimated to be 58% to 90% accurate in detecting the presence and location of amyloid plaques in the brain. They are highly useful for ruling out Alzheimer’s disease when plaques are not present and for helping narrow diagnostic possibilities when they are found.
Why PET Scans Are Not Used Alone
A PET scan is only one piece of the diagnostic puzzle. Healthcare providers also rely on:
Cognitive and memory testing
Medical history
MRI or CT scans
Blood or spinal fluid biomarkers
Together, these tools help create a clearer and more accurate picture of what is happening in the brain.
PET Scans, MRI, and CT: How They Work Together
While amyloid PET scans detect plaque buildup, MRI and CT scans show brain structure and health. These scans can reveal:
Brain atrophy
Vascular changes
Tumors or bleeding
Other conditions that may mimic dementia symptoms
Using multiple imaging tools helps providers better understand the root cause of cognitive changes.
Early Detection and Mild Cognitive Impairment
Amyloid PET scans can sometimes detect plaque buildup before noticeable symptoms appear, a stage known as preclinical Alzheimer’s disease. They are also helpful in cases of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), helping providers determine whether Alzheimer’s disease may be the underlying cause or if other factors should be explored.
A Final Important Reminder
The presence of amyloid plaques does not automatically mean a person has Alzheimer’s disease. Likewise, the absence of plaques can be just as informative, guiding providers toward other explanations and care plans.
Definitive confirmation of Alzheimer’s disease can only be made through a brain autopsy after death. However, today’s diagnostic tools allow clinicians to make highly accurate, informed diagnoses during life, helping families plan, understand, and access appropriate care.

In this episode of Minding Dementia, we continue our discussion on how Alzheimer’s disease is diagnosed today. While a definitive diagnosis can still only be confirmed through autopsy, modern medical tools now allow physicians to diagnose Alzheimer’s with up to 90% accuracy while a person is living.
This episode explores the key diagnostic tools doctors use alongside PET scans to better understand cognitive changes and rule out other causes of memory loss.
How Alzheimer’s Is Diagnosed
Physicians rely on a combination of evaluations, including:
Medical history and neurological exams
Neuropsychological testing (memory, language, problem-solving)
Blood tests to rule out other conditions
Brain imaging such as CT, MRI, and PET scans
No single test can diagnose Alzheimer’s—accuracy comes from using multiple tools together.
Biomarkers & New Testing Advances
Biomarkers found in blood, spinal fluid, and brain imaging help identify Alzheimer’s-related changes such as beta-amyloid plaques and tau proteins.
In May 2025, the FDA approved Lumipulse, the first blood test to assist in diagnosing Alzheimer’s:
Approved for adults 50+ with early cognitive symptoms
Can rule out Alzheimer’s with over 96% accuracy
Less invasive and more affordable than PET scans or lumbar punctures
Used alongside other diagnostic tools—not as a standalone diagnosis
Why This Matters
Earlier and more accurate diagnosis allows individuals and families to:
Plan sooner
Explore treatment options
Access clinical trials
Better understand next steps
While no test is 100% definitive without autopsy, today’s tools provide meaningful clarity and guidance.

Most entrepreneurs are bleeding money chasing new customers while their existing customers walk out the back door. Vance Morris—former birth control factory security guard turned Disney leader turned bankrupt executive turned carpet cleaning entrepreneur—runs three home service businesses on 90 minutes/week using Disney's systems and an 80/20 customer retention model. In this Total Disruption episode, Dr. Jake Clendenning interviews the customer experience specialist who proves the brutal math: new customer = $136, retained customer = $22. His secret? Engineering word-of-mouth with "response required" marketing.
Key Takeaways:
The $114 profit gap - Retained customers are 6x more profitable ($136 vs $22)
Disney's 80/20 rule - 80% repeat customers, 20% new (if it works for Disney, it works for you)
Answer your phone + show up on time = 8.9/10 business rating (costs $0, competitors can't even do this)
Maryland Smith Island Cake strategy - Top 5 customers/month get cake in the mail (response required)
"Processes = Freedom" - Disney taught him systems give you 90 min/week businesses
1.5-2.5x valuation multiplier - Documented systems = instant business value increase ($500K → $1M)
"It's not the customer's job to remember you" - Engineer retention with multiple touchpoints (postal service beats email deliverability)
The trust recession - Customer trust index at all-time low, making retention even more critical
AI for SOPs - Record yourself, feed to ChatGPT, get instant process documentation
Final mandate: "You won't profit unless you implement"

When Matthew Melvin started working at a car dealership in South Burlington, Vermont, he never thought that one mistake would lead to a life-changing stint in prison. Feeling he wasn’t being paid his full commissions on car sales, he made an impulsive decision to get what he felt he was owed. He hatched a badly-thought out plot to steal a car, sell it as his own and keep the profits. However, a basic reference and background check quickly revealed that the vehicle’s title was not in his name, but still belonged to the dealership. He was arrested and sentenced to prison.
While Matthew has taken responsibility for his poor life choices, he believes he has been treated unfairly due to his sexual orientation, religious and political affiliations, and his adult diagnosis of autism. While he and his lawyer argued that his punishment would be best served in a mental health facility, Matt was unfortunately sentenced to 18 months in prison to be served in general population.
Terrified and alone, Matthew began his prison term with the best of intentions—to keep his head down and serve his time as uneventfully as possible. But being a gay, Christian, Trump supporter brought him unwanted and negative attention. He was bullied by cellmates, targeted by gangs and even raped in one facility. The months he was imprisoned felt like decades and there were times he doubted he would make it out alive.
Bullied Behind Bars chronicles Matthew Melvin’s life feeling like an outcast, enduring a lonely and friendless childhood, and being punished for a crime that began with the honorable goal of him just trying to make a living.
