Ehlers Danlos Syndrome: A Story of Resilience S1E35
Effie Siverts is a 44-year-old mother of two teenage boys. From childhood, she was challenged with many unusual health conditions such as extreme flexibility (and dreams of becoming a contortionist), easy bruising, heart arrhythmia by age 6, chronic respiratory illness, rib and joint subluxations, Si joint dysfunction, GI issues, and recurrent throat abscesses.
By her early twenties, doctors would joke that they should do a study of her but only provided a simple diagnosis of benign hypermobility syndrome and told her to 'live life carefully'. Daily living tasks were a struggle and pregnancies had their risks and complications. By age 38, Effie had spent 29 years in chiropractic care and 15+ years in and out of physical and pelvic therapies only to undergo major pelvic and abdominal reconstructive surgery due to hernias and prolapsing weak connective tissues.
Ongoing post-operative prolapse led Effie to finally receive the diagnosis of a genetic disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (Type 3 Hypermobility). This diagnosis connected her lifelong struggles under the umbrella of this condition - an abnormality in how her body produces collagen, therefore affecting every facet of her body. Currently, coping and management strategies are the only tools available, and now Effie is teaching her strategies to her children who are manifesting symptoms of their own.

Dr. Jamie Wright is a neurology resident at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. She grew up in north Texas where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Molecular Biology at the University of Texas in Dallas. She went on to do a combined MD and PhD program at the University of Texas at Houston McGovern Medical School. She was inspired to pursue a career in both neurology and research by her own experiences growing up with a life-threatening, invisible illness, congenital hydrocephalus.
Hydrocephalus is caused by an abnormal build-up of fluid in the brain. The only current treatments for hydrocephalus are brain surgery, including placing a shunt to drain the fluid from the brain or making a new opening for the fluid through an endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV). Dr. Wright has undergone 18 neurologic surgeries to treat her hydrocephalus, including shunt surgeries, an ETV, and intracranial pressure monitoring. In addition to hydrocephalus, she also lives with multiple other invisible conditions, including corneal dystrophy, autonomic dysfunction, and gastroparesis.
Despite these challenges, she is dedicated to helping others living with chronic illness, through her work as a doctor, research, and advocacy work.
Ashlee is a young woman living with multiple chronic illnesses. She has spent a lot of her life in and out of the hospital and that influenced her professional and personal life. She never came across a member of her treatment team that wasn’t able-bodied and understood her world view as a woman with disability, so that inspired her to pursue a career in social work, advocacy, and empowerment.

At 35 years of age, she made the brave decision to have a hysterectomy, ending her battle with endometriosis, but kicking off early menopause and hormone imbalance. Despite these challenges, today Michelle runs a thriving business, and shares her story through writing. She aims to inspire others facing similar challenges and provide HOPE amidst adversity. Francisca "Frankie" Huff is 39 years old and lives with Crohn’s disease. She was first diagnosed with Crohn’s 26 years ago. She had one surgery in her early 20’s because part of the intestines became so inflamed that medication was no longer helping. Four inches of the intestines were removed in 2004 and she has been in remission since then! No medication, no symptoms. She's a firm believer now of a healthy lifestyle, so she became a personal trainer to help others and to inspire others that if there’s a will there’s a way.

Monica Norcross has been in the fitness and wellness industry for over twelve years. She’s a Certified Personal Trainer, a Fitness Nutrition Specialist, COPE Certified, and a licensed Zumba Instructor. She’s the founder and developer of The Still Workout™, a practice designed to bring strength, freedom, renewal and peace to the brain, body and soul, based on Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God.” She says, “The Still Workout™ has changed my life. I have no more chronic pain or anxiety, I’m building muscular endurance and strength, my relationship with Jesus is growing, and it’s the most exciting thing in the world to see others find the same results.” She lives in Magnolia, Texas with her husband and her dog.
In early 2016, at age 55, Kathi McCarty led a very fulfilling and busy life in the Foothills west of Denver, Colorado, as a single Mom of 3 kiddos, and VP/Manager of a large Denver-area Bank branch. Then, her life changed nearly overnight. It began with dry, gritty eyes, as if she had endured a sandstorm. Not long after that Kathi woke up with double vision.
A diagnosis of Graves Disease, TEDs (Thyroid Eye Disease), and four eye surgeries later, Kathi learned to adjust to her disability, and others’ reactions to it. “People can’t actually see your wound,” she says. She learned from personal experience there is a huge stigma with that, and she learned to navigate the prejudice that comes with having an illness that affects her sight with permanent double vision.
Ultimately, gratitude is her attitude. She learned among many other lessons, when you’re in a life-altering situation, you can take one of two paths – curl up, or catapult into the next chapter.

Phyllis Marlene Benstein has a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) and was previously employed as an Engineer for over 25 years. She now has multiple thriving businesses in the beauty, fashion, and networking industries. In 2014, during an arctic storm in Illinois, she went out to run some errands. When she got back home she parked at the end of her driveway and, in the process of bringing things in from the car, she slipped on ice and banged her chin on the driveway three times, jarring her brain. The next day she felt like she had been in a car accident, with aches and pains all over, a worsening headache, and double & triple vision. A concussion specialist verified that she had a concussion. It took years to get over the headaches and the eye issues, and some long-term effects still occur. All this has not stopped her from continuing to be successful. As a sought-after transformational expert, through her knowledge of makeup and fashion, and bolstered by her background in Engineering, leadership, and networking, Phyllis is a multi-faceted powerhouse.
