In this episode of Make Mental Health Matter Kelli chats with Warrior Dr. Paige Roberts.
She experiences neuro diverse-ADHD and dyslexia. This created suicidal ideation from elementary school around being stupid. Then she suffered 3 bad concussions at age 7, 18 and 22. Fell off a slide, a swim team school bus rolled and then a car accident. When she was 16 she had an abusive cross country-track coach who instructed all of the athletes to starve themselves, so she developed an eating disorder. She entered into a mentally and physically abusive relationship at 23 which took 5 years to finally get out of.
She started therapy at 17 and had to navigate ADD meds which became complicated with the concussions. She then found a trauma reprocessing therapy which helped more than talk therapy called Brainspotting, where she went on to become a clinical social worker in sports using this same therapy on her athlete clients. She started her practice 10 years ago now. But still does bimonthly Brainspotting and various other biohacking health practices to keep herself at optimal mind, body and spirit health.
Dr. Paige Roberts is an intuitive sports psychology consultant and energy optimization expert helping athletes and high performers in regaining or reaching their peak performance. She holds a BA degree in Exercise Science, a Masters of Social Work and a Doctorate of Integrative Medicine. She works with top CEOs, weekend warriors, collegiate, national and olympic athletes.

In this episode of Make Mental Health Matter, Kelli chats with Warrior Deb Harrison.
She was raised in an idyllic mountain setting in a household filled with trauma. Through the abuse and alcoholism, she learned a message of resilience and a deep thirst for knowledge. In addition to childhood abuse, she was in two marriages with various types of abuse, but has been blessed to connect with an incredible man, who became one of her best friends and is now her husband. Between the two of them, they have 3 teenagers - 18, 16, 15. That keeps her thirst for knowledge constantly filled.
She has battled depression, anxiety and panic her whole life and tried to use that to drive efforts to let everyone know how amazing they are. She proclaims this through her writing, speaking engagements and social media as much as possible. She is passionate about spreading hope, love and light as much as possible in everything she does.

In this episode of Make Mental Health Matter Kelli chats with Dr. Sugi (Sugandika T Subawickrama) is originally from Sri Lanka. She is a licensed psychotherapist in New York (LMHC) and New Jersey (LPC), a certified substance abuse clinician (Master CASAC) in New York and internationally and is also an approved DWI assessor and clinical screener for impaired driving offenders in New York. She is a strategic leader and a motivational speaker as well. Dr. Sugi has worked in Behavioral Health, Mental Health, quality, research, and Substance Abuse Counseling for over 20 years in various treatment settings.
Her educational journey in Sri Lanka, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States helped her to learn coping strategies and leadership skills. She completed the "Science of Well-being" course at Yale University, which provided a different perspective on life and happiness. Dr. Sugi completed her Doctorate from Liberty University, with a 4.0 GPA, and is affiliated with Sigma Beta Delta and Omega Nu Lambda Honor Societies. In addition, she is a Six Sigma Black Belt and a member of the American Counseling Association. She also serves as a chairwoman for youth at the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars). She has been selected/accepted to the roster for the Fulbright Specialist Program, allowing her to represent the USA and use her knowledge and experience with the world.

TEDWomen 2022 subtitling contest winner (English to Sinhala: Get out of the glass box) and received an invitation to TEDWomen present to participate connector pass 2022. Dr. Sugi has delivered 2 TEDx talks so far, Immigrant Resilience (Southlake, Texas), and I Am Not My Past and Rising Above Trauma (Staten Island, New York).
Dr. Sugi is passionate about research and is involved in numerous qualitative, quantitative, social, and marketing research both nationally and internationally. A glimpse into Matt’s story:
My journey began as a championship athlete, where I thrived in the realm of sports. The discipline, focus, and sense of purpose that came with being an athlete fueled my drive for success. However, when my athletic career came to an end, I found myself grappling with a sense of loss and a void that seemed insurmountable. Depression enveloped me, casting a shadow over my once-vibrant spirit.
As life unfolded, I encountered numerous setbacks and disappointments. These unexpected twists and turns led me down a path of profound mental anguish and isolation. It was during this time of immense pain that I became determined to find solace and meaning. Fueled by my own suffering, I embarked on a relentless pursuit of personal development, firmly believing that it held the key to alleviating my anguish.
Over the course of two decades, I dedicated myself to this transformative journey. While the thought of eliminating mental pain entirely had positive intentions, I discovered a new relationship with it. No longer burdened by shame or guilt, I began embracing and accepting my pain as a catalyst for growth. Each experience of pain became a valuable lesson, guiding me toward greater self-awareness and personal evolution.
Amidst the trials and tribulations, I have been fortunate to have my wife by my side for the past 20 years. Her unwavering support and love have been a source of strength and stability throughout my tumultuous journey. Together, we have weathered storms and celebrated triumphs, forging a bond that stands the test of time.
Currently, I am training diligently for my first 100-mile ultra marathon, pushing my physical and mental boundaries to new heights. In addition, I have dedicated myself to becoming an emotional wellness coach, drawing from my own experiences to guide and support others on their paths to healing and growth. For the past eight years, I have had the privilege of working with a non-profit organization, where I promote leadership development and empower individuals to unlock their full potential.

On today’s episode of Make Mental Health Matter, Kelli brings back one of her previous guests Alexandrea Diel to share her journey through recovery.
Just over a year ago the courageous woman was on my show speaking about the struggle of living with Borderline Personality. She fought for her life. She didn’t want to live with the pain of the trauma from her childhood and a life of domestic violence. She left the love of her life, her home, her beloved dog who had kept her alive through the darkness. She choose to save her life. She moved back to Colorado and immediatly went into treatment. It wasn’t until 3 months later she accepted she was an addict. For 14 years she had used Meth and even though she had not been in active use for a few months she just couldn’t understand why all the therapy wasn't helping her heal. She still wanted to die. Then one day she came to believe and fully accept that she was an addict. She decided to make another major life change and seek sober living. I hope that her story will help others that are fighting for their life.

His 12-year-old son completed suicide in 2002 and he also found out the same day his wife was cheating on him. The 2 worst things a person could experience in life, all in one day. He is now very grateful because it deepened who he is. He never knew he could love that much...or hurt that much.

On this episode of Make Mental Health Matter Kelli chats with Heather Dearman.
She is a Civil Service Specialist at the City of Aurora, a Chairperson at the 7/20 Memorial Foundation and Spirit of Aurora, and a founding member of The Colorado Resilient Life Center (CORLC) and Survivors of Tragedy Outreach Program (STOP).
Heather’s cousin Ashley was paralyzed in the July 20, 2012 Aurora Theater Shooting. Ashley’s unborn child and 6-year-old daughter Veronica were also killed. Heather was inspired to join the foundation in 2015 after experiencing the love and compassion the community displayed at her youngest daughter’s lemonade stand fundraiser for the theater shooting memorial. For the following 3 years, she helped lead fundraising efforts for the permanent memorial, and in July of 2018, the permanent memorial "Ascentiate" was installed.
Heather and her 7/20 Foundation board are now focused on providing support across the nation to communities who have experienced similar tragedy, through their paper crane peace project, and the foundation has grown into a resource for advice and guidance in the aftermath of other mass tragedies. She has continued to advocate for survivors' long-term needs, alongside others in the STOP coalition. Heather has been a keynote speaker and panelist at several victim advocate conferences, and received the 2022 Outstanding Volunteer award from the National Philanthropy Association.
Heather also works closely with Aurora’s police officers and firefighters in her role with the city of Aurora’s civil service commission. Her connections with first responders, victims, survivors, and communities who have experienced tragedy propel her passion for proving that there is more love in the world than hate.

He came from a single-parent home. His mom raised him, he had a rough upbringing, however still finished school, and went on to trade school where he received his associate degree in the auto/diesel industry. From there, he started is own businesses and worked in the AG industry and real estate his whole life. He is now campaigning to become the President of the United States.
He is committed to bringing people together and building bridges across communities. He believes that we are stronger when we work together and that our diversity is one of our greatest strengths.
He is driven by a deep sense of purpose and a desire to make a positive impact on the world.

Alison is a military family member, Licensed Professional Counselor, and Founder of Central Oregon Veterans Ranch (COVR).
Inspired by her brother’s military service and deployment for the invasion of Iraq in 2003, Alison began a six-year career with the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2005. Working in both urban and rural settings, she developed a passion for healing combat trauma across the lifespan. It was during this time that the vision for an alternative to the medical model of treating veterans was born; the concept of a “PTSD ranch” that would engage veterans in nature, community, and the support of peers for healing. COVR was established in 2014 as a 501c3 nonprofit organization and thrives today as a community hub offering free peer support and agri-therapy programs to veterans of various ages and eras.
Alison served as the Executive Director of COVR from 2015 to 2022 and is launching into the next phase of her career; consulting, teaching, and inspiring others with her journey and the model of care she developed in Central Oregon.
Alison is co-producer of the 2022 documentary Cover Me, The Path to Purpose, a gripping film about the transformative impact of COVR. She is the winner of a 2009 Red Cross Community Hero Award, 2016 Deschutes County Health Advisory Board Health Hero Award, and 2017 Bend Chamber of Commerce Community Hero Award. Additionally she served as an instructor at Oregon’s Department of Public Safety Standards & Training from 2018-2021, facilitating Mental Health scenarios and teaching Veterans Awareness to Law Enforcement recruits. Alison currently lives in the Denver area with her husband, a Navy and Army combat veteran, where they enjoy running and hiking in the foothills of the Front Range, reading, and serving others.
Robert is an Army Veteran, a survivor of another horrible type of military trauma, including severe physical injuries and numerous suicide attempts. You’ll hear his story.

In this episode of Make Mental Health Matter, Kelli chats with Nicole Burright who shares her warrior story of the loss of her dad and 2 cousins, to completed suicides. She also has a husband who has been very depressed at times as well as a son and found herself in a very dark. She knows it is important to share her story with others so that they do not feel so alone.
This is not the easy conversation, but an important one to have. Losing anyone to suicide is hard, so could you imagine losing 3 people within your family?!?!

"I have been passionate about helping as many people as possible since I was 2 when I told my dad that I was going to heal people. Much of this was thrown into shambles when I lost my dad, Dan, on December 30th, 2015. I was sent into a tailspin, depressed if I didn’t know any better, had the hardest time getting up let alone going to work. Even though I had helped people with nutrition, healed myself from the inside out, had 2 beautiful children, was a nurse, and had a great marriage it was so hard to face reality every day. One Sunday, about 6 months after he passed, I was sitting in church and I was shaken to the core by the message. It was as though God shouted “I know you could not help your dad, but you still have thousands to help.” This was to catapult me to the next level, to learn about our ECS, educate on hemp, electrolyzed water for an alkaline state, essential oils, and of course ask the question, “how can I use the death of my father for the good of the kingdom?” I was shortly later introduced to Kelli through a CBD company and we shared the loss of loved ones by suicide. I have lost more than I can count on one hand this way and I have a passion to help as many as possible. I love to educate on many topics, mental health being one of them. Thank you, Kelli, for sharing your story and starting this foundation. It is okay, to not be okay and reach out. We are here to help."

In this episode of Make Mental Health Matter show Kelli talks with Donna Carlson.
She is a mental health advocate, using her new book, Crazy, as Usual, to normalize the conversation about mental health at work. Her eperience stems from a variety of roles. She has provided customer relationship strategy and marketing for multinational and boutique organizations since 1989. She studied for a Master of Arts in Global Leadership to cultivate a whole- life leadership program for women that she started teaching in 2018, after three years as a Strategic Business Partner for the Center for Creative Leadership in Colorado Springs.
Her pandemic shift in 2020 was a chief executive role starting a new Chamber of Commerce in Estes Park, leveraging that customer relationship strategy to triple membership in two years. For an encore she led member development in Colorado Springs in 2022 before creating a consulting program that provides customer relationship strategy.
Her vision for the future is to cultivate wellness services to provide an easier path for businesses to design mental well-being into employee wellness programs.
She lives in Colorado Springs with her husband Jeff and their only son—Riley, the eternal puppy—just looking forward to the next time their three brilliant adult daughters can visit.

She is a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist with a focus and comprehensive certifications in Family Systems. She was a 20 year, Masters level teacher who made a shift in career after her family struggled with Substance Use Disorder.
Through her own journey of finding support for her oldest son, Lisa questioned the traditional support models, focused on her own personal recovery and learned to connect with her son in a meaningful way while healing herself and her other relationships. Lisa went from surviving her life to living and thriving, and was able to create the influence and connection that she was desperately trying to achieve as a mother.
Lisa is the founder of Reclaim and Recover-Family Recovery Services. A comprehensive support organization for family members who love someone struggling with mental health and substance use disorders. She works individually with families as well as develops and runs family programs for treatment centers across the country. She believes in the process of parallel recovery and empowering families, and uses her experience as an educator to present ideas in a way that makes learning and growth achievable. Meeting each family where they are in the process of growth and healing is important to her work guiding and honoring each person’s journey. Her primary goal is to support families to honor both themselves and their loved one with compassion and connection and to empower families to have the tools of sustainability needed to support their loved one and invite change. She is also now a TEDx Speaker.

A little about her story: Grief touches us all, yet it's astonishing how often it leaves us feeling imprisoned by loss. My own journey through grief began with the heart-wrenching loss of both my parents within a span of nine months. This profound experience led me to question the societal constructs surrounding grief. I remember vividly, two weeks after my mother's transition (a term I prefer over death), a moment of revelation struck me as I collected her ashes. A thought crossed my mind, almost like a whispered message: "Portia, could your mother's transition be a catalyst for your own transformation?"
At first, this idea left me perplexed. But it was during my sessions with a grief therapist that I found solace in writing. These sessions paved the way to my first book, "Finding Grace within Grief: Her Transition...My Transformation." This book is more than a narrative; it's a journey of breaking free from societal expectations of grief and embracing a personal path of understanding and acceptance.
My experience with grief has opened unexpected doors, revealing lessons and insights I never anticipated. Now, my mission is to guide others in discovering the hidden gifts within their grief. By granting ourselves the permission to grieve and finding gratitude in our journey, we learn that in grief, nothing is truly lost. It's about redirecting the love we hold and seeing grief not as an end, but as a transformative passage.
Portia is often referred to as "Portia The Producer," is a renowned TV Host, visionary Producer, and dedicated Grief Awareness Advocate. Her journey through the profound loss of her parents led to the birth of "The Grief Grantor," a transformative TV show airing Sundays on E360 TV.

When Jeff was two weeks old, it was confirmed that he had hydrocephalus and underwent his first brain and abdominal surgery. Over the years he has had many similar surgeries, each with its own set of challenges and victories. Despite the challenges of surgery, he traveled the world with Up with People, got married, raised three children, worked as a private investigator, and is now the owner of Hydro with Hope, and the host of a TV show called “Invisible Condition” that airs LIVE twice a week on e360tv. Invisible Condition is a show that brings awareness to all the medical conditions millions of people deal with that aren’t visible from the outside.
Through Hydro with Hope and his TV show, Jeff spreads the message that
FIRST: you are not alone.
SECOND: There is HOPE.
THIRD: There is a community of HELP and resources out there for you.

In today's episode of Make Mental Health Matter, Kelli is honored to bring her sister Michaela Zach onto the show and share her impact she is making on perinatal mental health.
Michaela is a International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and a Lamaze Certified childbirth educator from Chandler, AZ. She has been working in the maternal child health field since 2002. She owns her own private lactation practice and also works for a pediatric office part-time. She has practiced as a birth doula, birth and breastfeeding educator and has held roles as a faculty member with CAPPA and is a previous board member for the Arizona Lactation Consultants Association and the Arizona Breastfeeding Coalition.
She has advanced training in perinatal mental health and is very passionate about this field. She, herself, suffered from postpartum depression with her children and hopes to make a difference in other birthing parents lives. Michaela is married and has three children and four dogs.

In this episode of Make Mental Health Matter, Kelli talks with Melissa Grosboll.
She has always been an advocate for mental health. Her mother and sister both suffered from mental health challenges and her cousin completed suicide in 2017. She believes the way mental health is treated in this country especially, is abysmal and if we can reduce the stigma and get people the help they need, lives could be completely changed. For years her company donated a portion of its sales to mental health organizations, including Make Mental Health Matter nonprofit organization, and she is still a Warrior for Mental Health monthly donor for Make Mental Health Matter, even though she no longer owns that company.
Melissa Grosboll retired from chiropractic practice after 20 years serving others. She owned an edible cookie dough dessert shop for 5 years, bringing joy to her community and supporting mental health organizations. After her breast cancer diagnosis in 2023, she returned to her health and wellness roots and now works with cancer patients and survivors as a Cancer Exercise Specialist and Certified Personal Trainer. She will share her journey with us in this episode.

In this episode of Make Mental Health Matter show, Kelli chats with Christina Hoffeld.
She was diagnosed with clinical depression at 17 years old. She decided to shy away from traditional medicine and asked her therapist for tools to help keep the depression at bay. They discovered that proper sleep and routine are a huge key to that success. As she got older, she learned techniques that helped her with her journey through depression and anxiety. Unfortunately, she also experienced a ton of fertility struggles, and in her adult life, that was when her depression and anxiety was at its worst.
Christina is a classically trained chef who has recently moved into the health insurance field. She is an advocate for mental health and working through challenges because she knows now that tomorrow will be better.
