Black Wings Over Arizona by Col Richard Toliver (USAF Ret)
MLK Weekend Reflection
As we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this weekend, we are called to reflect not only on his leadership and words—but on the generations of Black men and women whose courage, service, and sacrifice helped shape the America he challenged to become better.
Dr. King did not walk alone in history.
During the very years he spoke truth to power, countless Black Americans were serving, leading, and defending freedom—often in silence, often without recognition.
One such voice is Colonel Richard Toliver, author of Black Wings Over Arizona – Including Women of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. A protégé of the legendary Tuskegee Airmen, Colonel Toliver served 26 years in the U.S. Air Force, completing two combat tours and 446 missions. His work brings forward stories long hidden from the national consciousness.
This book is not simply military history—it is American history.
It weaves together the lives of Black service members who stood firm in the face of segregation, discrimination, and global conflict, including the extraordinary women of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, led by Charity Adams Earley. Their leadership and excellence restored morale during wartime and affirmed dignity in a nation still struggling to offer it equally.
While their story has recently gained broader awareness through **Tyler Perry’s film The Six Triple Eight, the truth is this legacy has always mattered—even when it wasn’t acknowledged.
MLK Weekend invites us to remember that the fight for justice has many chapters.
Some were spoken from pulpits.
Some were marched in the streets.
And some were carried quietly—through service, discipline, and unwavering resolve.
If you want to understand the foundation upon which Dr. King stood…
If you believe history should be remembered in full…
If you’re ready to step beyond the polished narrative and into the light of truth—
Black Wings Over Arizona is a powerful place to begin.
Because history isn’t just what’s written.
It’s what we choose to remember.
