Season 86 Episode 2929
Strength in Vulnerability: A Conversation About Anorexia S2E7
Halley Stocks has always been a high achiever and from the outside looking in, most would never have suspected the inner turmoil she dealt with in her late adolescence and even sometimes today. Despite good grades, varsity athletics, and generally being accepted by her peers, she never felt like she was enough. The invisible workings of her mind began to match her outward appearance around the age of 16 when she began manipulating food and exercise to mitigate her emotional unrest. Halley was clinically diagnosed with anorexia at age 17 and hospitalized for the first time. She was discharged weeks later after a brief refeeding period but her brain was far from healed and after 4 years battling the condition through her college years, she admitted herself to another program at the age of 21. Anorexia itself is far from invisible... you can see the pale sunken face, the emaciated body, and the protruding bones... but what you can't see is the storm of unsettled emotions beneath the surface. The depression, anxiety, self-hatred, and the desperate desire to feel worthy of taking up space on this planet and hidden behind the food. Today, Halley is proud of the woman she has become. She is an accomplished Doctor of Physical Therapy and Integrative Health Coach with a passion for rock climbing and all things outdoors but the journey between rehab at the age of 21 and where she is today at the age of 37 has been anything but easy. Today we'll talk about what anorexia looked like for Halley, what the process of true recovery has been like, and how even today, she has to actively manage and mitigate some of the brain patterns that lead to her condition years ago, but that's the difference. Today, she knows that she can do that.
