TBI Survivor: Stories of Resilience S2E4
The night of August 14th, 2021, Zak Clayton was involved in a life-altering motorcycle accident that left him stranded in a roadside ditch for an agonizing 7 hours. A pair of compassionate fishermen discovered him the following morning and got him help. His injuries included Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), concussive trauma, brain hemorrhage, as well as fractures to his skull and facial bones. Zak now lives with daily migraine headaches, cognitive endurance challenges, and sudden confusion and alterations in attitude. His life oscillates unpredictably between moments of productivity and days of being fixed on the couch, needing to shield himself from sensory stimuli such as noise, light, and sound. Nonetheless, Zak remains resolute in his commitment to ensure that every day includes some form of progress and, more significantly, the opportunity to assist others in need. He has discovered that even the simplest acts of kindness, such as helping someone get dressed, dispel any notion of uselessness. By uplifting others in need, he finds his own strength and fulfillment. To this end, Zak founded Community Pay it Forward, with a mission to empower individuals, businesses, and charitable missions to make a positive impact in their communities. Community Pay it Forward has a system to generate funds for non-profits and, just as important, the program fosters community through networking, storytelling, and relationship building. By connecting individuals and businesses, we create a true win/win/win/win situation for the greater good.
