Jodi taught me about STEM - Science, Tech, Engineering and Math - she was involved back in the 1980's before it even had a name. As one of the few women physicists, she was encouraged to continue down her path. She worked on the space shuttle and met the astronauts.
At some point she pivoted and went to work for TERC, Technical Education Resource Center where she has worked for 31 years. It's a think tank that helps educators catch children who are falling through the cracks. Many children who are extremely talented in a certain area do not necessarily thrive in the typical education setting.
Jodi and her colleagues do research, develop games, help teachers, and create curricula. Zoombini’s, a popular game now was created in the 1990’s and has been brought back recently. Zoombini’s is a fun way for children to learn how to problem solve. The game helps them develop the thinking needed to resolve issues everywhere in their lives.
Jodi has written a book called “Reaching and Teaching Neurodivergent Learners in STEM,”based on her many years of research.

Jodi Asbell-Clarke, Ph.D. is the author of the book titled Reaching and Teaching Neurodivergent Learners in STEM: Strategies for Embracing Unique Problem Solvers (Routledge/Taylor&Francis; Publication date: November 23, 2023; $34.95 paper). Grounded in decades of research and classroom practice, this groundbreaking work emphasizes the inclusion of learners who think differently. This book presents individual examples of neurodivergent journeys in STEM and connects neurodiversity to the types of innovative problem-solving skills needed in today’s workforce.
