S8 E2 - Hearts & Hands Reiki with Martha Spruce

Martha has been practicing Reiki for her clients and teaching Reiki to her students for over 29 years in the midcoast area of Brunswick, Maine. As you may be aware, Reiki is a very simple, hands-on healing practice that helps with relieving pain, restoring well-being, and helping to reduce anxiety and depression. Martha also incorporates aspects of Shiatsu, Craniosacral Therapy, and reflexology in her practice, with training in each these modalities.
Using local need as her guide, she has provided Reiki for clients and has taught students to do what she does, for almost three decades. In addition to her busy home-based practice, some of her additional venues include:

*  giving Reiki to surgical patients in the operating room of local hospitals, with the surgeon's permission
* giving Reiki to dying patients as a private Certified Hospice volunteer
* supporting home-based, terminally ill clients with Reiki while they take medicine to end their suffering, as part of Death wIth Dignity
* designing and running a weekly Reiki Clinic for 16 students at Bowdoin College for four years
*  teaching Reiki on campus to Bowdoin College students for four years
* teaching both Introductory and Advanced Reiki to Emergency Medical Technicians at their annual recertification conference so that they could offer Reiki to patients in their ambulances, for ten years
* hosting Reiki Clinics for Emergency Medical Technicians, so that they could experience Reiki for themselves and feel the benefit, for ten years
* providing Reiki Clinics to physicians, nurses, various medical clinics, local support groups, and nursing home staff, for many years
* giving Reiki to patients while employed by a private physical therapy practice for nine years
* giving Reiki to people with Alzheimers, at the request of family members, to help increase their awareness and decrease their agitation
* offering online Reiki I and II classes to students across the USA and Canada
* treating people with Distant Reiki, anywhere
* treating clients at their own homes, in the hospital, and at rehab and hospice facilities
* teaching Reiki to groups of children
* treating pets in their home environment
* treating staff in a free medical clinic serving the homeless
* treating patients in comas with Reiki, at the request of family members

Martha used Reiki to heal her own brain injury from a head-on collision with a car while she was on her bicycle in 1976, which she considers a miracle. She decided to offer Reiki to the midcoast Maine community as a way to pay forward the miracle she received. She works full time Monday through Friday, 10am-5pm, and teaches Reiki classes on weekends at her home sanctuary. She would like to express her deep gratitude to the many excellent teachers and therapists from whom she has received so much healing and guidance.
Her favorite quote for others is something that she first used extensively on herself, for healing depression, anxiety, and executive function disorganization after her brain injury: ""Use the difficulty."" She wants to hear about whatever difficulty her client or student has, because that is what is hindering the full expression of the Divine Light within them. That person's connection to the Divine can help them work through any kind of difficulty for healing, and healing is not necessarily the same as ""cure"". She feels that being a compassionate witness to difficulties serves to help others hear themselves and begin to work out their own solutions.
